St Patricks Day

St Patrick’s Day is relatively unknown around Ixtepec and as a result I had to explain the background to my students and the other people who live here. They were particularly interested in the fact that there are no snakes in Ireland as a result of St Patrick chasing them all over the edge of a cliff. I hadn't encountered any snakes in the time that I had been in Mexico so it was no coincidence that my first encounter with a serpent was actually on St Patrick’s Day.

I was sitting in my office when I heard someone running down the corridor to inform me that if I wanted to see a snake the groundskeepers had caught one outside. I preferred the idea of my first encounter with a snake being in a somewhat controlled environment so I followed them out to find a pretty big snake hanging from a tree by a rope, weighed down by a rock tied to its tail. Imp not sure what kind of snake it was but it wasn’t poisonous. All snakes that they find around the university are destined to meet their doom incase one of the students gets bitten by them.
